On April 3, 2026, China officially released GB 47372—2026, a new mandatory national safety standard for power banks. Taking effect April 1, 2027, this regulation marks a major step forward in protecting consumers from fire, overheating, and long-term battery degradation risks.
Five Core Safety Upgrades
GB 47372—2026 doesn’t just raise the bar — it redefines it. Here are the five landmark upgrades that set this standard apart from anything that came before.
Enhanced Battery Abuse Testing
Beyond raising crush test pressure to 20kN, the standard adds a nail penetration test for the first time in a consumer product standard, directly simulating internal short circuits. Products must not catch fire or explode.
Post-Aging Lithium Plating Detection
Products must undergo lithium plating analysis after 300 charge-discharge cycles, helping prevent lithium dendrite growth from piercing the separator and eliminating a major root cause of spontaneous combustion in aged batteries.
Stricter Overcharge & Thermal Controls
Overcharge test voltage is raised by 30%. Products must also include a permanent lockout function so that once an abnormality such as overcharge or undervoltage is detected, the unit is disabled to prevent continued use in a compromised state.
Unique Product ID ("Battery Passport")
Every product must carry a unique identification code that lets consumers trace the battery brand and core specifications — ending “mystery box” purchasing and improving accountability across the supply chain.
Mandatory Safe-Use Lifespan Labeling
Products must clearly display a recommended safe-use lifespan, reminding users to replace aging power banks before degradation becomes a safety risk.
Supporting Safer, Smarter Infrastructure
China's Market Weight
China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of power banks. Standards set here ripple across global supply chains, OEM manufacturing, and voluntary safety benchmarks worldwide.
Who Is Affected?
- Brands exporting to or manufacturing in China
- OEM and ODM manufacturers
- Battery cell and BMS component suppliers
- Global markets likely to adopt similar benchmarks
